Motorcycle insurance: Do you need it?

It’s almost that time of year again: Motorcycle season! If you love riding a motorcycle – or you are planning to get one in 2017 – you might be wondering if you need motorcycle insurance.

The answer, in Ohio, is simple: YES you need motorcycle insurance!

But why do you need it? That answer is also simple. Under Ohio law, it’s illegal to drive any motor vehicle – including a motorcycle – without insurance or what is called “proof of financial responsibility.”

Under Ohio law, you need insurance for a minimum of $25,000 for bodily injury or death; $50,000 for bodily injury or death to two or more individuals and $25,000 for injury to property, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles. If you don’t have insurance coverage that meets these minimums, you must provide proof to the state that you meet its other financial responsibility standards.

So how do you do that? You need to show the state that you have enough assets to handle the same minimum monetary requirements. There are several ways you can provide this proof, according to the DMV.

You might be thinking: But I have car insurance. Isn’t that good enough? The answer is no. Your motorcycle isn’t covered by that policy. If you have a car AND a motorcycle, you need both types of policies under state law.

The legal experts at the Schottenstein Law Offices also recommend that you carry more insurance coverage than the minimum, as having this additional coverage could protect your valuable assets – like your home, your wages and your savings — if you are in a bad accident.

We know it sounds pricey – and it can be. But you are protecting your current and future assets. Accidents happen. We want YOU to be protected!
