Going on a summer road trip? Ways to stay safe on the journey

Summer often means road trips, right? Packing up the car, grabbing your family and heading out on a summer road trip is an annual event for many folks.

Summer, however, is one of the most dangerous times to be on the roadways. If you and the family are heading out on a summer road trip, you’ll want to check out our list of ways to stay safe on the journey.

Read on for more tips:

Rest up

One of the worst things you can do is leave for a road trip when you are sleep-deprived. Make sure you get an adequate amount of ZZZs the night before you hit the road. Drowsy driving is dangerous!

Gear up

Make sure your car is well-stocked in case of an emergency! Make sure you have food and water, a flashlight, jumper cables and a spare tire (and the tools to change it!) and a First Aid kit.

Tune up

No one wants to deal with a break-down in the middle of a road trip, so make sure your car is ready to hit the road. Check your tires, fluid levels and battery at a minimum before heading out. It’s also smart to enroll in a roadside assistance plan.

Sit up (and buckle up!)

When you are driving, check your posture to make sure you are not slouching over. And buckle up! If you have young children, make sure they are adequately restrained in car seats, boosters or seat belts, depending on age.

Fuel up

Don’t forget to schedule rest breaks so you can use the bathroom, grab a snack and stretch your legs (and get more gas!). It’s a good idea to stop every few hours and its an even better idea to switch drivers so no one gets fatigued.
