Been in a car crash? Here are three things NOT to do

You are out there on the road, driving along when WHAM! You are in a car crash. It’s a shocking and frightening occurrence that – for most of us – doesn’t happen often.

It can be hard to know what to do when you are shaken, possibly injured and unprepared. But the fact is, a car crash can happen when you are least expecting it so it’s best to be prepared.

You probably know what to DO if you are in a car crash but do you know what not to do?

Read on for three things NOT to do if you are in a car crash:

Not call the police

Even if it seems like you and the other driver – and your passengers are OK – and if the damage is minimal, you might be tempted to skip calling the police. Don’t do it. Injuries can pop up weeks or even months later, insurance issues can arise and people can vanish – or give you false information. A police report is your best defense after a crash, no matter who is at fault. Always call the police. They are here to help. And make sure you get a copy of the report!

Not take photos

Everyone nowadays has a cell phone and one of the best ways to document the aftermath of a car crash is to snap a few pictures or a take a quick video. This evidence can be invaluable if there are serious injuries or major damage. The images could also be useful when and if you file an insurance claim. Some insurance companies even let you upload photos to their app or website, streamlining the claim process.

Not have your insurance and other documents handy

No one expects to be in a car crash, so maybe you’ve gotten lax about making sure your insurance and registration is up to date. Maybe you can’t even remember who your auto insurance policy is through. Is the information at home? In your purse or briefcase? Making sure all your documents and information are handy – and in your glove box – eliminates extra stress at the scene of the accident. You will need these documents so make sure they are up-to-date and handy.
