fireworks safety

Who doesn’t love to ooh and ahh over the brilliant fireworks displays found in cities, towns and villages all over Ohio? We know we do! But fireworks safety is no joke. It can be a dangerous thing to watch or take part in.

While fireworks are lovely, there are dangers. Burns, fingers or eyes damaged or lost and also property damage can occur, if fireworks aren’t safely used.

In Ohio, it is illegal to use “commercial grade” fireworks. Some lawmakers are trying to change that law, however.

It’s possible to enjoy the show while practicing good fireworks safety and the legal experts at the Schottenstein Law Offices are sharing these fireworks safety tips so you and your family can enjoy the holiday. Read on:

Leave them to the experts

The simple fact is, fireworks are dangerous. According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks caused about 15,600 fires in the U.S. in 2013. And 35% of the people seen in emergency rooms from June 20-July 20 were there because of fireworks injuries – including children. To stay safe, don’t set off your own fireworks, and don’t let your kids play with them either. Treat your family to a professional show.

Glow, baby

While at the professional show, bring glow sticks or glow bracelets. In addition to being fun, they also let you keep a closer eye on your children. Little kids can get lost in the big crowds at fireworks displays, so make sure you talk about a meeting point or how to approach a grown up in case your group gets separated

Patience is key

Chances are, the fireworks display you attend will be crowded. It’s a good idea to pack your patience along with your snacks, blanket and glow sticks. Lots of people mean it’ll take extra time to get in and out of the venue, so to avoid traffic accidents or pedestrian crashes, take your time and follow the established routes.
